Assessment: task_f9cd72342aef4e7b8701b131b12d29ff

Task: Investigate low-confidence dream-cycle failure_pattern finding dreamrepair:05d411d5bf91679cb24d4a1a26b338fd for project=mac, without changing any skills, tools, or source code. Candidate evidence: memory record mem_964adbf9dd0a442eb9376e062a157265 (record_type deployment_learning:mac) originating from failing task task_36b9f07dbb9a4849bf6225c108ce6399 ("Implement src/mac/release_registration_service.py with remote and evidence validation (repo_change)"). Finding kind: failure_pattern — scope project — confidence low (0.35). Assessment Date: 2026-07-16 Assessed by: fleet worker (investigation, no source/test/skill/tool edits)

Status: CLOSED — NOT ACTIONABLE; supporting evidence is an environment/harness failure on an unlanded feature, not a code defect

Finding Under Review

The dream cycle proposed a low-confidence (0.35) failure_pattern for the mac project, supported by a single deployment-learning record tied to a failing repo_change task that was asked to create a new module, src/mac/release_registration_service.py, "with remote and evidence validation". The proposed repair fingerprint is dreamrepair:05d411d5bf91679cb24d4a1a26b338fd.

Ground Truth Observed

Measured in the task-owned worktree with the bootstrapped .venv (python3/git/gh present; the interpreter runs import mac cleanly).

1. The claimed artifact does not exist

  • ls src/mac/release_registration_service.py → No such file or directory.
  • git log --all -- src/mac/release_registration_service.py → empty (no history on any branch; the file was never committed).
  • grep -r "release_registration_service" . → no matches (no references anywhere in the worktree — no imports, no tests, no docs).
  • No release- or registration-named module exists under src/mac/ (ls src/mac | grep -iE 'regist|release' → empty).

The feature was never landed. The failing parent task was a net-new implementation request, not an edit to existing code.

2. Reproduction attempt

Command Result
python -c "import mac" OK (package imports cleanly)
python -c "import mac.release_registration_service" ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'mac.release_registration_service'

The only reproducible "failure" is the expected ModuleNotFoundError for a module that was never written. The mac package itself is healthy.

3. Failure class of the supporting record

Per the parent task's recorded metadata, the attempt's failure_class is environment, with repeated worker_exception events and empty output tails (output_tail_unavailable_reason: "transition supplied no stdout, stderr, output, log, or tail field"). The repo's own taxonomy (src/mac/attempt_failure_classifier.py) treats environment as a class distinct from work (product/code defect). An environment-classed attempt with no output tail is a harness/runtime failure signal, not a captured code defect.

4. Scope the feature would have touched (analogues)

To characterize what a "release/registration service with remote and evidence validation" would have implicated had it landed, the nearest existing analogues are:

  • src/mac/deploy_service.py — DeployService, manifest hashing/validation, deployment record shaping.
  • src/mac/deploy_env.py — deploy config/identity dataclasses and env parsing.
  • src/mac/fleet_deploy.py — SSH target canonicalization, owner-only file/dir writes, retention planning (the "remote" surface).
  • src/mac/evidence_validators.py, evidence_reuse_verifier.py, evidence_blobs.py, evidence_cli.py — the existing "evidence validation" surface a new service would compose with.

None of these reference the claimed module; the finding does not point at a defect in any of them.

Finding

  • Does the file/feature exist? No. src/mac/release_registration_service.py has no file, no references, and no git history on any branch. The feature was never implemented.
  • Is the supporting evidence a code defect or an environment/harness failure? Environment/harness. The parent attempt is failure_class=environment with repeated worker_exception and empty output tails — a runtime/harness failure on an unlanded net-new implementation task, not a reproducible product defect.
  • Evidence count and confidence. One supporting record at low confidence (0.35). A single environment-classed record is insufficient to justify a skill/tool/source change.
  • Reproduction attempt result. import mac succeeds; importing the claimed module raises the expected ModuleNotFoundError. There is no product-code fault to reproduce.
  • Is the finding actionable as a repair? No. There is no code to repair. Any future work would be a fresh feature-implementation task, not a dream-cycle repair of an existing defect.

Note

This assessment file is the committed deliverable for an investigation-only task. Per the task instruction, no skills, tools, source, or test files were modified. A prior attempt established the same ground truth but failed contract verification because it produced no committed file (repo_change evidence requires changed files); this doc closes that gap without touching product code. Generated coverage artifacts (coverage.json, .coverage) remain gitignored. Everything here is fleet-generic — no secrets, host names, personal paths, or operator identities.
